Best serious mic

1. Shure MV7+ USB-C & XLR Dynamic Microphone, Black

by Shure

Who it’s for: Streamers and podcasters who want one mic that works over USB-C now and an XLR interface later, in a room that isn’t treated.

Verdict: Our pick for anyone ready to spend properly on audio. It’s a dynamic mic with USB-C and XLR, an LED touch panel with tap-to-mute, and a real-time Denoiser and Voice Isolation, per the listing. Shure itself says dynamics are the better choice in harsher settings, which in a home means a room with echo and PC noise. It’s the premium pick here.

What we like

  • USB-C and XLR: plug in now, upgrade later (listing)
  • Built-in Denoiser and Voice Isolation
  • Tap-to-mute touch panel

Worth knowing

  • Premium buy compared with the rest of this page
  • Dynamic mics need to be close to your mouth: pair with an arm (#8)

Best for software mixing

2. Elgato Wave:3 Condenser Microphone

by Elgato

Who it’s for: Streamers who want to mix game, music, Discord and mic separately for the stream and their headphones.

Verdict: The Wave Link software is the reason to buy it: mix up to eight sources into two separate mixes, per the listing, plus 24-bit/96 kHz recording. As a condenser it picks up more of the room, so it suits a quieter space.

What we like

  • Wave Link: up to 8 sources, 2 mixes (listing)
  • 24-bit/96 kHz
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Worth knowing

  • Condenser: picks up more room noise than the Shure (#1)
  • USB only

What we left out and why

  • Shure MV7+ in other colours: only seen in search; buy the colour you like, but check it’s the MV7+.
  • Elgato Stream Deck MK.2, Wave Neo, Key Light and RØDE PodMic USB: our searches for these failed, so they’re not verified. We won’t add them without a check.
  • Elgato 4K S capture card: it’s on our Black Friday gaming page instead. Prices change all the time. We don’t show prices on What2Buy – use the “Check price on Amazon” buttons for the current price.

FAQ

USB or XLR for streaming?

USB is simpler: plug the mic into your PC and go. XLR needs an audio interface but gives you more room to upgrade. The Shure MV7+ (#1) does both, per its listing.

Dynamic or condenser?

Shure says dynamic mics suit harsher environments and condensers more controlled ones. At home, that means a dynamic for a noisy or echoey room and a condenser for a quiet one (Shure).

Do I need a boom arm?

It’s the best next buy after the mic, because getting the mic closer to your mouth matters more than the mic itself. See our mic arms under £50.
