How we choose products

Plainly: what we check, what we don't, and how you can tell the difference in every guide.

How our guides are made: we research and draft guides with the help of AI tools, using manufacturers’ specs and Amazon UK listings. Joe checks the picks and the facts, and approves every guide before it goes live. Where he’s used a product himself, the guide says so.

This page explains exactly how products end up in a guide, so you can judge how much weight to give our picks.

What we check for every pick

  • The listing details. We read the manufacturer’s information and the Amazon UK listing: specs, compatibility (for example, which console or screen size it fits), what’s in the box, materials, warranty and any warnings. Each guide cites where its specs come from – usually “Amazon UK product listing (seller-provided details)” with the date we checked.
  • UK availability. Every pick is sold on Amazon UK to UK addresses. Where it matters, we look for UK plugs, UK sizes and UK-specific versions.
  • Fit for the job. A guide answers one question – “what should I buy to protect my Switch 2?”, say. Each pick is matched to a job and to the person it suits best, and we spell out trade-offs and compatibility gotchas under Worth knowing.
  • Price checks for budget guides. If a guide’s title promises a budget (such as “under £20”), we check each pick on amazon.co.uk and record the date. We use the regular price, not a short-lived deal or Prime-only price, and drop anything that’s regularly over the limit. We don’t print prices on the site because they change – use the “Check price” buttons for today’s price.

Joe’s own experience – only where it’s stated

When Joe has used a product himself, the guide says so in plain words. If a guide doesn’t say that, the pick is based on the research above, not on Joe’s own use. We’d rather be clear about that than suggest otherwise.

What we don’t do

  • No lab work or measurements. We don’t run benchmarks, and we don’t publish measurements we haven’t made.
  • No made-up scores. We don’t give star ratings or scores out of 10, and we don’t copy review counts from retailers.
  • No paid placements. Brands can’t pay to be included, ranked higher or left out, and we don’t accept payment for coverage.
  • No copied reviews. Pros, cons and verdicts are our own, not pasted from retailer listings.

Gift guides and comparisons

Gift guides follow the same rules and link each gift to its full buying guide where we have one, so you can see the alternatives. Head-to-head (“X vs Y”) pages compare two products on their listed specs and say who each one suits.

Keeping guides up to date

The “Updated” date at the top of each guide shows when it last changed. When we update a guide we re-check that the picks are still available, re-check prices for budget guides, and replace anything that’s been discontinued. Spotted something wrong? Email [email protected] and we’ll fix it.
