Headphones are great for ranked games, but for YouTube, music and chilled single-player nights, a pair of desk speakers is lovely. Three things decide which pair suits you: power (USB-powered speakers need no plug socket), connections (Bluetooth lets your phone join in) and size (bookshelf speakers sound bigger but take more desk). (Here’s how we choose products.)
- Best overall: Creative Pebble V3 (#1)
- Best sound for music: Edifier R990BT (#2)
- Best with a subwoofer: Logitech Z407 (#3)

FAQ
Do PC speakers need a plug socket?
Not always. The Creative Pebble V3 (#1), Trust Orada (#5) and Amazon Basics (#7) run off USB. The Edifier (#2), Logitech Z407 (#3) and Z150 (#6) need mains power.
Can I connect PC speakers to a PS5 or Xbox?
Usually through your monitor or TV’s headphone or audio output, if it has one. Speakers with more than one input, like the Edifier (#2) or Logitech Z407 (#3), let a PC and a console share the same pair.
Are bookshelf speakers better than small PC speakers?
Bigger drivers and cabinets generally give fuller sound, but they take more space. For a small desk, the Creative Pebble V3 (#1) is the better fit.
