Nothing makes a desk look messier than a waterfall of cables, and nothing makes it look better faster than tidying them. The trick is to do it in the right order: get the power strip off the floor, bundle the long runs, then clip the loose ends on the desktop. I’ve picked one or two products for each step. (Here’s how we choose products.)

Buying guide

The four-step tidy desk plan

Step Job Our pick Back-up
1 Get the power strip off the floor VIVO tray (#1) KHAMAL 2-pack (#5)
2 Bundle the run down to the socket Amazon Basics tube (#2) shinfly kit (#6)
3 Group cables under the desk CableGenie clips (#3) SOULWIT 50-pack (#8)
4 Keep everyday cables in reach UGREEN magnetic clips (#4) Lamicall spring clips (#7)
  1. Unplug everything and lay it out. Label each plug with a bit of masking tape so you know what’s what.
  2. Mount the tray under the back of the desk and put the power strip in it. Plug everything into the strip.
  3. Run one cable to the wall, inside a sleeve, down the nearest desk leg.
  4. Clip the leftovers: monitor, mic and webcam cables along the underside, and charging cables on the desk edge.

Which one should you get?

  • Just one thing: an under-desk tray (#1). It does the most for the least effort.
  • Gaming or streaming desk with lots of kit: a tray, a sleeve and a pack of CableGenie clips (#1, #2, #3).
  • Renting or a glass desk: adhesive clips only (#3, #4, #7, #8).
  • Moving monitors off the desk too? Our dual monitor arms guide has arms with built-in cable channels.

What we left out and why

  • StowBin 2-pack trays: the listing title says clamp-mounted but the details say screw-mounted, so we couldn’t be sure what you’d get.
  • Cable spines and raceways: good for very long runs, but most need drilling or a lot of adhesive; we’ve kept this to simple fixes.

Prices change all the time. We don’t show prices on What2Buy – use the “Check price on Amazon” buttons for the current price.

FAQ

What's the best way to manage cables under a desk?

Screw a tray under the back edge (#1 or #5) and put the power strip in it. Then only one cable needs to go to the wall socket.

How do I hide cables running down a desk leg?

Use a split cable sleeve like the Amazon Basics tube (#2) and clip it to the leg.

Can I use cable trays on a glass desk?

The trays here screw into the desk. For glass, stick to adhesive clips like #3 (it also comes with adhesive pads).
