A Stream Deck is the nicest upgrade a streamer can make after the mic and camera: one button to switch scenes, mute, play a sound or start recording. But you don’t have to buy Elgato’s. There are now plenty of cheaper controllers with LCD keys, some with dials for audio, and there’s a free option if you’ve got a spare phone. The catch is software: the alternatives use their own apps rather than Elgato’s, so I’ve noted which ones list OBS support. (Here’s how we choose products.)

  • Most Stream Deck-like for less: SOOMFON 15-key (#1)
  • Best cheap pick with dials: SOOMFON Studio Deck SE (#2)
  • Closest to the Stream Deck+: SOOMFON Studio Deck 10-key (#3)
  • Best for FIFINE mic owners: FIFINE D6 (#4)

Want to try it free first? Elgato’s own Stream Deck Mobile app gives you six keys on a phone or tablet at no cost (more on that below).

by SOOMFON

Who it’s for: Streamers who mostly want physical dials for mic, game and music volume, plus a few scene buttons.

Who it’s for: Streamers who like the look of a Stream Deck+ (keys, dials and a touch strip) but want to spend less.

Best for FIFINE mic owners

4. FIFINE D6 stream controller

by FIFINE

Who it’s for: Streamers who already own a FIFINE mic and want a 15-key controller from the same brand.

Verdict: FIFINE is the budget mic brand a lot of new streamers start with, and the D6 is its 15-key controller, with OBS, Streamlabs, Twitch and YouTube all listed. It’s very similar to the SOOMFON 15-key (#1), so pick on brand and software.

The official yardstick

6. Elgato Stream Deck Mini (for comparison)

by Elgato

Who it’s for: Anyone who wants Elgato’s own Stream Deck software and plugins, and only needs a few buttons.

Verdict: Not an alternative, but the honest comparison: this is the cheapest physical Stream Deck. Six LCD keys and Elgato’s own software. If you want more keys from Elgato, our streamer gift guide covers the bigger Stream Decks.

The free option: Stream Deck Mobile

Before you buy anything, it’s worth trying Elgato’s own app. According to Elgato’s Stream Deck Mobile page, you get six keys free, for good, on iOS 15 or Android 9 and newer. It talks to the Stream Deck app on your Mac (macOS 10.15+) or PC (Windows 10+) over Wi-Fi. A paid Pro upgrade unlocks up to 64 keys and custom layouts. If you find yourself using it every stream, that’s your sign a physical controller is worth it.

Which one should you get?

  • Classic 15 keys for less: SOOMFON 15-key (#1) or FIFINE D6 (#4).
  • You want audio dials: SOOMFON Studio Deck SE (#2), or the 10-key Studio Deck (#3) for more keys and a touch strip.
  • You like stats on screen: STREONOR S15 (#5).
  • You want Elgato’s software: Stream Deck Mini (#6), or see the bigger Stream Decks in our streamer gift guide.
  • Just starting out? Our streaming setup for beginners covers what to buy first, and our streaming mics under £50 sorts the audio.

What we left out and why

  • Razer Stream Controller: on Amazon UK it was only sold by Amazon US, so it ships from abroad.
  • Razer Stream Controller X: the listing showed as currently unavailable.
  • Loupedeck Live S: no seller was showing on the listing, so there was nothing to buy.
  • TourBox NEO: a good editing controller, but its listing showed only 1 left when we re-checked on 11 October, and we don’t link to last-one listings.
  • AmpliGame D6: it looks like the same controller as the FIFINE D6 (#4), from a third-party seller at a higher price.
  • Elgato Stream Deck MK.2 and Neo: they’re already in our streamer gift guide.
  • Decksaver covers and similar: accessories, not controllers.

FAQ

Is there a cheaper alternative to the Stream Deck?

Yes. The SOOMFON 15-key (#1) gives you the same number of LCD keys as a classic Stream Deck, and the SOOMFON Studio Deck SE (#2) adds dials. Both use SOOMFON’s software rather than Elgato’s.

Do Stream Deck alternatives work with OBS?

The SOOMFON 15-key, SOOMFON SE and FIFINE D6 all list OBS on Amazon UK. Check the table below for the rest.

Can I use my phone as a Stream Deck?

Yes. Elgato’s Stream Deck Mobile app gives you six keys for free on iOS 15+ or Android 9+. It connects over Wi-Fi to the Stream Deck app on a Mac or PC. A paid Pro upgrade unlocks up to 64 keys.

Do these work with Stream Deck plugins?

Don’t assume so. None of the listings says it works with Elgato’s plugins – each uses its own software.
