Most PS5 owners need one thing first: a second controller, so a mate can play or one pad can charge while you use the other. After that it’s about how you play – back paddles for shooters, a six-button pad for fighting games, or a way to play away from the TV. I’ve sorted these by the job they do. (Here’s how we choose products.)

  • Best overall: DualSense Midnight Black (#1)
  • Best pro controller: SCUF OMEGA (#2)
  • Best removable back buttons: Razer Raiju V3 Pro (#3)

1. PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller – Midnight Black

by PlayStation

Who it’s for: Anyone who needs a second controller, or a replacement for a tired original.

Verdict: Our pick for most people. It’s Sony’s own pad, so you get haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and the built-in mic in every game that supports them, plus a 3.5mm headset jack and USB-C charging. The Midnight Black finish makes it easy to tell apart from the white pad in the box.

What we like

  • Full haptics and adaptive trigger support
  • Built-in mic and 3.5mm headset jack (listing)
  • Sold by Amazon

Worth knowing

  • No back buttons – see #2 and #3

Best pro controller

2. SCUF OMEGA PS5 Wireless Performance Controller – Black

by SCUF

Who it’s for: Competitive players who want paddles, clicky triggers and lots of tuning – on PS5 and PC.

Verdict: Officially licensed for PS5, with four rear paddles, two side action buttons and G-Keys (11 extra inputs in all), TMR thumbsticks built to resist drift, and Omron mouse-style switches on the triggers, d-pad and face buttons. A phone app tunes the sticks and triggers, and it adds 1K polling on PC.

What we like

  • Officially licensed PS5 controller (listing)
  • Four paddles plus side buttons and G-Keys
  • TMR anti-drift sticks and Omron switches
  • Sold by Amazon

Worth knowing

  • Lots of buttons to learn if you only play casually

Best removable back buttons

3. Razer Raiju V3 Pro Wireless Controller for PS5 and PC

by Razer

Who it’s for: Players who like back buttons but want to take them off when they don’t need them.

Verdict: Four removable mouse-click back buttons and two claw-grip bumpers, TMR anti-drift thumbsticks with swappable caps, and triggers you can set to quick clicks or full analogue pulls. Razer’s 2.4GHz HyperSpeed wireless keeps lag low, and four onboard profiles save your setups.

What we like

  • Removable back buttons and claw-grip bumpers
  • Triggers switch between click and full analogue (listing)
  • Up to four onboard profiles
  • Sold by Amazon

Worth knowing

  • Fewer extra inputs than the SCUF (#2)

Best for fighting games

4. HORI Fighting Commander OCTA for PS5

by HORI

Who it’s for: Fighting-game players who want a six-button pad without buying an arcade stick.

Verdict: Officially licensed by Sony, with micro switch buttons, a short-throw stick with an 8-way gate, and a headset jack with audio controls on the pad. HORI’s own spec sheet says it’s wired with a 3m USB cable and doesn’t do haptics or adaptive triggers – that’s the trade-off for a proper fight-pad layout.

What we like

  • Officially licensed by Sony (listing)
  • Micro switch buttons and 8-way gate stick
  • Wired – no batteries to charge
  • Sold by Amazon

Worth knowing

  • No haptics, adaptive triggers or motion (HORI spec)

Best accessible controller

5. Sony PS5 Access Controller

by PlayStation

Who it’s for: Disabled players, or anyone who needs a controller they can set up around their own range of movement.

Verdict: Sony’s highly customisable controller kit. You choose the button layout, swap between stick caps, adjust the stick arm length, and place it in any orientation – on a desk, a wheelchair tray or an AMPS mount. Four 3.5mm ports take extra switches, and it can team up with a DualSense to add features like haptics.

What we like

  • Fully configurable layout and stick caps
  • Four 3.5mm ports for extra switches (listing)
  • Can combine with a DualSense or a second Access controller
  • Sold by Amazon

Worth knowing

  • Built for accessibility – not a general-purpose pad

Best for playing away from the TV

6. PlayStation Portal Remote Player – White

by PlayStation

Who it’s for: PS5 owners who share a TV, or want to keep playing in another room.

Verdict: It streams games from your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi to a handheld screen with DualSense controls built in, haptics and adaptive triggers included. It plays compatible games installed on your console, so your PS5 does the work – your Wi-Fi needs to be solid for it to shine.

What we like

  • DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers built in (listing)
  • Plays your installed PS5 games away from the TV
  • Sold by Amazon

Worth knowing

  • Needs your PS5 and a good home Wi-Fi connection

Best controller case

7. tomtoc Protective Case for PS5 DualSense Controller

by tomtoc

Who it’s for: Anyone carrying a controller in a bag who doesn’t want scuffed sticks.

Verdict: A slim hard shell shaped around the DualSense, with a charging hole so you can top it up without taking it out, and a design that stops buttons getting pressed (and the pad waking up) in your bag.

What we like

  • Slim, shaped hard shell
  • Charge without removing the pad (listing)
  • 12-month tomtoc warranty

Worth knowing

  • Sold by tomtoc’s own store (third-party seller on Amazon)
  • Holds the pad only – no cable pocket mentioned

Which one should you get?

  • Just need a second pad: DualSense Midnight Black (#1).
  • Shooters and ranked play: SCUF OMEGA (#2) for the most inputs, or Razer Raiju V3 Pro (#3) if you want removable back buttons.
  • Fighting games: HORI Fighting Commander OCTA (#4).
  • A standard pad doesn’t work for you: PS5 Access controller (#5).

What we left out and why

  • DualSense Edge: the Midnight Black version was sold by Amazon but wasn’t due until mid-November, and the white one was only from a third-party seller when we checked. Worth a look if it’s back in stock from Amazon.
  • Nacon Revolution 5 Pro and Victrix BFG pads: only a handful left, or sold by third-party sellers.
  • HORI OCTA Pro and Fighting Stick Mini: very low stock or slow third-party dispatch.
  • Razer Wolverine V2 Pro: currently unavailable on Amazon UK.
  • US-import cases: we left out a case shipped from Amazon US.
  • Headsets: they have their own guide – see PS5 headsets under £50.

FAQ

Do I need a pro controller for PS5?

No. A spare DualSense (#1) does everything most people need. A pro pad like the SCUF OMEGA (#2) or Razer Raiju V3 Pro (#3) adds back buttons and anti-drift sticks for competitive play.

Does the HORI Fighting Commander OCTA have haptics?

No. HORI’s spec sheet says it doesn’t support haptic feedback, adaptive triggers or motion. It’s a wired six-button pad for fighting games.

Can the PlayStation Portal play games without a PS5?

The Portal is a remote player: the listing says it plays compatible games installed on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi, so you need the console switched on.
