Beard trimmers

Best beard trimmers for stubble (UK): sorted by the shortest setting and step size

Stubble is all about the shortest setting and how fine the steps are, so that's how we've sorted these, with a UK plug check for each one.

Keeping stubble looking deliberate comes down to two numbers: the shortest length a trimmer can do and how big the jump is between settings. A 0.2 mm step lets you fine-tune a short beard; a 0.5 mm step is fine for most people; fixed combs are simplest of all. So I’ve sorted these by step size, not by brand. (Here’s how we choose products.)

We’ve also checked the UK bits that listings bury: whether it charges from a UK 3-pin plug, a 2-pin bathroom shaver socket or USB (and whether a plug is in the box), and whether it’s waterproof.

  • Best for precise stubble: Philips Beard Trimmer 7000 (#1)

  • Best on a budget: Philips Beard Trimmer 3000 (#3)
  • Best UK plug out of the box: Panasonic ER-GB42 (#5)
  • Best for stubble plus clean edges: Philips OneBlade 360 Face (#6)

Best for precise stubble

1. Philips Beard Trimmer 7000 Series

by Philips

Who it’s for: Anyone who keeps a short beard and wants to nudge the length up or down a fraction at a time.

Verdict: Our pick for most stubble wearers. Forty lock-in settings in 0.2 mm steps is the finest adjustment on a mainstream trimmer here, and it’s 100% waterproof with a charging stand, per the listing. The listing doesn’t say what plug the charger uses, so check that if it matters to you.

Best stubble specialist

2. BaByliss Super-X Stubble Trimmer

by BaByliss

Who it’s for: Someone who only ever wears short stubble and wants a tool built just for that.

Verdict: A trimmer made only for stubble: a motorised length setting from 0.4 mm to 5 mm in 0.2 mm steps, with a display so you can repeat the same length every time, per the listing. The catch is the 5 mm maximum, so it won’t do a longer beard.

Verdict: Forty lengths in 0.5 mm steps with a lockable wheel, 100% waterproof and up to 120 minutes cordless, per the listing. The one UK catch: it comes with a 2-pin charger, so you’ll need a bathroom shaver socket or an adapter, which isn’t included.

Best UK plug out of the box

5. Panasonic ER-GB42 Wet & Dry Beard Trimmer

by Panasonic

Who it’s for: Anyone who just wants to plug it into a normal UK socket.

Verdict: The only pick here whose listing promises a standard UK 3-pin plug. It has 20 cutting lengths and is 100% waterproof, per the listing. The step size isn’t stated, so it’s here for convenience rather than precision.

Best OneBlade with fine adjustment

7. Philips OneBlade Pro 360 Face & Body

by Philips

Who it’s for: Someone who likes the OneBlade idea but wants a proper adjustable comb.

Verdict: Adds what the standard OneBlade lacks: a 20-length comb from 0.4 mm to 10 mm, plus a body kit, charging stand and case, per the listing. It’s the dearer OneBlade.

What we like

  • 20 lengths, 0.4–10 mm (listing)

Best OneBlade alternative

8. BaByliss X-Blade Stubble Trimmer & Shaver

by BaByliss

Who it’s for: Someone who wants the trim-and-shave idea for less.

Verdict: A trim-and-shave tool with a flexing head and four clip-on combs from 1 to 5 mm, per the listing. Fixed combs keep it simple, but you can’t fine-tune between them.

Best corded backup

9. Wahl Groomsman Cord/Cordless Beard Trimmer

by Wahl

Who it’s for: Someone who forgets to charge things and wants to plug in and carry on.

Verdict: It works corded or cordless, so a flat battery never stops a trim, and the combs cover 0.5 mm to 13 mm, per the listing. The listing doesn’t say it’s waterproof, so keep it out of the shower.

Which one should you get?

  • Most people: Philips Beard Trimmer 7000 (#1).
  • Only ever wear short stubble: BaByliss Super-X (#2).
  • Tight budget: Philips 3000 (#3).
  • Hate adapters: Panasonic ER-GB42 (#5), the only UK 3-pin plug here.
  • Want sharp edges too: OneBlade 360 Face (#6), or the OneBlade Pro (#7) for more lengths.
  • Also trimming hair or body? See our grooming kits and multigroomers.

What we left out and why

  • BaByliss Super Stubble XTP: does the same job as the Super-X (#2) with the same 0.2 mm steps; we picked one.
  • Remington Barba: sold by Amazon and in stock, but its listing gives nine settings without confirming the shortest length, which is the whole point of a stubble trimmer.
  • Wahl Extreme Grip: a long runtime, but the listing gives no length range.
  • Philips OneBlade Hybrid 360: the same combs as #6; one standard OneBlade is enough.
  • Multigroomers (Philips Multigroom, Braun All-in-One, Wahl All-in-One): they’re in our grooming-kits guide instead.
  • Unbranded stubble trimmers: search results only; we didn’t include unknown brands.

FAQ

What trimmer setting is stubble?

It’s personal, so we won’t give you a magic number. What matters is the range: every pick here goes down to 1 mm or less, and the Philips 7000 and BaByliss Super-X let you move in 0.2 mm steps to find your length.

Do 0.2 mm steps really matter?

For very short stubble, yes: the difference between two settings is a bigger share of the length. For a longer beard, 0.5 mm steps are plenty.

Can I use a 2-pin charger in the UK?

Yes, in a bathroom shaver socket, or with an adapter in a normal 3-pin socket. Braun’s listing for the BT5525 says the adapter isn’t included.

What's the difference between waterproof and wet & dry?

We only repeat what each listing says. ‘100% waterproof’ listings usually mean you can rinse the trimmer under the tap; ‘wet & dry’ means it can be used on a wet face. Check the manual for what the maker allows.
